Bodegas Bideona – A Modern Voice for Rioja Alavesa

In the rugged limestone hills of Rioja Alavesa, Bodegas Bideona is quietly but confidently reshaping the conversation around Spanish fine wine. Established in 2018 as a joint venture between the Izagirre family and Península Vinicultores, this dynamic project brings together deep-rooted local heritage and international vision. With leadership from Masters of Wine Andreas Kubach and Sam Harrop, Bideona set out to rediscover and reframe the region’s identity through precision viticulture and micro-parcel winemaking.

Bideona’s vineyards more than 300 individual plots scattered across villages like Villabuena, Samaniego, Leza, Laguardia, and Baños de Ebro, represent a mosaic of Rioja Alavesa’s finest terroirs. Many of the vines are over 50 years old, dry-farmed, and rooted in poor, rocky soils at high altitudes. These conditions yield low yields and concentrated fruit, perfect for translating place into wine. Every plot is vinified separately, preserving the nuance of each site and allowing for a true sense of origin in every bottle.

The winery’s focus is clear: to craft elegant, expressive wines that break free from the stereotypes of industrial Rioja. With minimal intervention and careful use of oak, Bideona’s wines are layered, textural, and unmistakably terroir-driven. Their village series—including bottlings like L4GD4 (from Laguardia) and V1BN4 (from Villabuena), offer a rare, Burgundian-style glimpse into the subtle distinctions of Rioja Alavesa’s subzones. The Las Parcelas range highlights blends from select plots, both red and white, offering complexity and a refined, modern edge.

Though still young, Bideona is already earning a reputation as one of the most thoughtful and exciting producers in Rioja. This is a winery that honors the region’s deep winemaking traditions, while boldly pushing it into the future, vine by vine, village by village.
