Castiglion del Bosco – Heritage and Precision in Brunello di Montalcino

In the rolling hills of Montalcino’s northwestern reaches lies Castiglion del Bosco, one of Tuscany’s oldest and most storied estates. With a winemaking legacy dating back to the 12th century and a founding role in the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG in the 1960s, the estate seamlessly blends deep-rooted tradition with a modern, world-class vision. Today, it is known not only for producing some of the most elegant Brunello in the region but also for being a refined destination where nature, heritage, and wine come together.

The heart of the estate is its extraordinary location. Nestled within the UNESCO-protected Val d’Orcia and surrounded by 2,000 hectares of wild woodland and farmland, only a small portion—around 62 hectares—is under vine. The vineyards sit at elevations ranging from 350 to 450 meters and are planted exclusively to Sangiovese. Thanks to the estate’s altitude, breezy climate, and mineral-rich soils, the wines of Castiglion del Bosco are known for their purity, lifted aromatics, and finely etched structure.

Since 2003, the winery has been under the stewardship of Massimo Ferragamo, who revitalized the property with great care and investment, turning it into both a modern luxury estate and a reference-point producer for Brunello. The estate farms sustainably, combining precision viticulture with respect for the natural rhythms of the land. In the cellar, the approach is meticulous but restrained—fermentations take place in stainless steel, followed by aging in large oak casks and French tonneaux, with minimal intervention.

The wines are classically styled but finely tuned. The flagship Brunello di Montalcino offers elegance, balance, and age-worthy structure. Even more rare and revered is Campo del Drago, a single-vineyard Brunello sourced from the estate’s highest and rockiest parcel—a wine of depth, precision, and restrained power. Their Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello Riserva Millecento further demonstrate the estate’s range, offering different expressions of terroir and vintage with consistency and grace.

Castiglion del Bosco represents a unique fusion of tradition and ambition. While steeped in centuries of Tuscan history, its wines reflect a forward-looking refinement—built on care, elegance, and a deep respect for the character of Montalcino’s land.
