Domaine des Pothiers – A Legacy of Terroir in Côte Roannaise
Situated in the picturesque village of Villemontais, Domaine des Pothiers is a testament to centuries of viticultural heritage. The estate's roots trace back to the 16th century, with the Pothier family cultivating the land long before it became known as Côte Roannaise. In 2005, Romain Paire took the helm, continuing his family's legacy and steering the estate towards organic and biodynamic practices. Under his stewardship, the domaine has flourished, now encompassing 23 hectares of vineyards planted on the region's unique granite soils.
The vineyards, situated between 400 and 600 meters above sea level, benefit from a continental climate that imparts freshness and minerality to the wines. Gamay Saint-Romain, a local variation of Gamay, thrives here, offering wines with distinctive peppery notes. Other varieties include Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Négrette, each contributing to the estate's diverse portfolio.
Romain's winemaking philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the terroir to express itself authentically. Fermentations are carried out with indigenous yeasts, and maturation occurs in concrete vats or old oak barrels. This approach results in wines that are pure, expressive, and reflective of the unique Côte Roannaise terroir.
