Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Southern Rhône

Domaine du Banneret is one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s best-kept secrets, a tiny, traditional estate where time seems to move more slowly and the wines carry the soul of the appellation’s past. Founded in 1989 by Jean-Claude Vidal, a classically trained artist turned vigneron, Banneret was born out of a desire to make wine with character, authenticity, and unwavering fidelity to the old-school ways of the region.

This micro-domaine, which spans just over 4 hectares, is now helmed by Jean-Claude’s daughter Audrey Vidal-Prado and her husband Frédéric. The couple continues the family’s dedication to hand-crafted, terroir-driven wines made in the most traditional style imaginable. Farming is organic, and all 13 permitted Châteauneuf-du-Pape varieties are planted in the vineyards, reflecting the full spectrum of the appellation’s identity. Each plot, mostly in the lieux-dits of Grand Pierre, Cabrières, and Pignan, contributes to a complex, multi-layered final blend.

Winemaking at Domaine du Banneret is resolutely old-fashioned: indigenous yeast fermentations, whole-cluster macerations, long aging in old oak barrels, and no filtration. There is no formula here, just intuition, patience, and a deep connection to the vineyard. The result is a singular expression of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, one that prioritizes elegance over power, perfume over polish.

Despite its small size and understated profile, Domaine du Banneret has a loyal following among those who appreciate soulful wines with personality and a true sense of place. In a region where modernity sometimes threatens to overwhelm tradition, Banneret stands firm as a living tribute to Châteauneuf’s origins.
