Giovanni Rosso – Barolo from the Heart of Serralunga

Giovanni Rosso is a name that resonates deeply in Barolo, particularly in the village of Serralunga d’Alba, where the estate’s roots stretch back over a century. Though the family has farmed vineyards in this noble terroir since the 1890s, it wasn’t until 1995 that they began bottling under their own label, bringing to life a singular vision: to produce wines that are pure, powerful, and unmistakably Serralunga.

At the core of Giovanni Rosso’s identity is its exceptional vineyard heritage. The family owns parcels in some of the most revered crus of Serralunga, including La Serra, Broglio, Damiano, Meriame, Cerretta, and the crown jewel: Vigna Rionda, one of Barolo’s most hallowed sites. These vineyards, with their steep slopes and mineral-rich soils, form the heart of a house style that is structured, age-worthy, and deeply expressive of place.

The estate is now led by Davide Rosso, who took over from his father Giovanni in the mid-2000s. After working in Burgundy and studying the great domaines of France, Davide returned to Barolo with a refined sense of precision and terroir-driven winemaking. He brought a new level of detail to both vineyard and cellar work, introducing careful organic farming, hand harvesting, and meticulous sorting, while remaining firmly rooted in traditional practices like long macerations and aging in large, neutral oak botti.

Davide’s approach is one of quiet confidence, respectful of tradition, but never afraid to evolve. Under his guidance, Giovanni Rosso has not only refined its Barolo offerings but also expanded its range, crafting beautifully nuanced Langhe Nebbiolo, vibrant Dolcetto and Barbera, and even elegant wines from their new project on the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily.

Still, it is in Barolo, and especially Vigna Rionda, where Giovanni Rosso’s soul resides. The Barolo Vigna Rionda is a true rarity: only made in top vintages, it is a wine of depth, longevity, and quiet power. The Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba, sourced from multiple estate plots, offers a more immediate yet unmistakably noble expression of the village’s deep structure and dark fruit.

Giovanni Rosso is not a house of trends or shortcuts. It is a family estate that grows its wines with care, from soil to bottle—crafting Barolos that are both timeless and deeply personal, grounded in the vineyards that have been part of their life for generations.
