  • Historic Barolo Producer – Family-owned since 1881, with Mauro Mascarello leading the estate as one of the last icons of traditional Barolo winemaking.

  • Monprivato Mastery – Sole proprietor of the legendary Monprivato vineyard, producing one of Barolo’s greatest and most age-worthy single-vineyard wines since 1970.

  • Traditional Methods, Timeless Wines – Long macerations with submerged cap, aging in large Slavonian oak botti, no filtration, and sustainable viticulture.

  • Legacy and Future – With Mauro's children, Elena and Giuseppe, stepping in, the estate continues its uncompromising commitment to classicism and terroir-driven wines.

Founded in 1881, Giuseppe Mascarello e Figlio stands among the true greats of Barolo, a reference point for classically made Nebbiolo and a torchbearer of traditional Langhe winemaking. Based in Monchiero, the estate is helmed by Mauro Mascarello, one of the last remaining masters of his generation—alongside legends like Bartolo Mascarello, Giovanni Conterno, and Beppe Rinaldi—known for his commitment to the soul of Barolo: site expression, restraint, and time.

The heart of the estate is the iconic Monprivato vineyard in Castiglione Falletto, one of Barolo’s most storied crus. Though the family long used Monprivato fruit in its multi-vineyard blends, Mauro was the first to recognize and isolate its full potential, bottling the first single-vineyard Barolo Monprivato in 1970—a watershed moment in Barolo history. With its white and gray marl soils and southwest-facing slopes, Monprivato offers textbook conditions for Nebbiolo, producing wines of haunting perfume, elegance, and depth. Mauro’s acquisition of nearly the entire vineyard in the 1980s has made Monprivato one of the few true monopole grand crus in Barolo.

Traditional winemaking is central to Mascarello’s identity: long macerations using the cappello sommerso (submerged cap) technique, spontaneous fermentations, and long aging in large, neutral Slavonian oak botti. There is no barrique, no filtration—only the gentle guidance of nature, time, and experience. Mauro’s meticulous farming practices, which began decades before sustainable viticulture was in vogue, prioritize low yields, biodiversity, and a deep respect for terroir.

In 1993, Mauro introduced a new pinnacle: Cà d’Morissio, a "super-riserva" Barolo made from a historic Michét clone of Nebbiolo planted by his grandfather in 1921. Today, Cà d’Morissio is one of the most coveted wines of the Langhe, standing alongside Monfortino and Giacosa’s red-label riservas.

While Monprivato remains the flagship, the estate also produces rare and refined Barolos from Villero and Santo Stefano di Perno, as well as vineyard-designated Dolcetto, Barbera, and Freisa that show the same precision and care.
Today, Mauro is gradually passing the reins to the next generation—Elena and Giuseppe Mascarello—who are committed to continuing the legacy of purity, patience, and profound site expression that defines one of Piedmont’s greatest domaines.
