Weingut Günther Steinmetz – Old Vines, New Energy on the Mosel
Few estates embody the next generation of Mosel winemaking quite like Weingut Günther Steinmetz. Based in Brauneberg, in the heart of the Middle Mosel, the estate is led by the dynamic and exacting Stefan Steinmetz, who has transformed his family's modest cellar into one of the region’s most exciting addresses. With a focus on old vines, steep slopes, and a return to traditional methods, Steinmetz is reshaping the Mosel narrative, one bottling at a time.
While the winery has been family-owned for generations, it was under Stefan’s leadership, starting in the early 2000s, that the estate began acquiring small, often forgotten plots in grand cru-caliber sites, many with ungrafted vines over 80 years old. These vineyards, scattered across villages like Brauneberg, Piesport, Kesten, and Wintrich, form the foundation of a range that is as soulful as it is precise.
The winemaking is hands-off but deeply attentive: spontaneous fermentations, extended lees aging, and minimal sulfur are standard. Stefan’s style favors structure over sweetness, texture over flash, and always seeks to express site over style. His dry and off-dry Rieslings are vibrant and crystalline, while the fruity and noble-sweet wines retain astonishing focus and energy.
Steinmetz’s approach is bold yet grounded in tradition—no trend-chasing, just a quiet confidence in the depth of the land and the clarity of Riesling. The wines are intellectual without being austere, generous without excess. Above all, they are authentic reflections of the Mosel’s terroir, reimagined for today’s drinker.
