Matteo Correggia – Roero’s Visionary Pioneer
Before the world recognized Roero as a serious source of fine wine, Matteo Correggia had already seen its potential. In the late 1980s, at a time when the region was overshadowed by its more famous neighbors in Barolo and Barbaresco, Matteo set out to prove that Roero’s sandy soils, steep hillsides, and native grapes could produce wines of profound depth and elegance.
Taking over his family’s modest vineyards in Canale in 1985, Matteo brought a new level of ambition to Roero. He introduced rigorous vineyard management, lower yields, and a more precise, thoughtful approach to winemaking. Inspired by the great wines of Piedmont but determined to give Roero its own identity, Matteo focused on showcasing the unique expression of Nebbiolo and Arneis in this distinct terroir. His Barbera and other native varieties also gained attention for their vibrancy and depth.
Tragically, Matteo’s life and vision were cut short in 2001 in a vineyard accident. But his legacy lived on through his wife, Ornella, who courageously continued his work and preserved the soul of the winery. Today, the estate is in the hands of a passionate and skilled team, led by Matteo and Ornella’s son, Giovanni Correggia, who has inherited not only the vineyards but his father’s pioneering spirit.
The estate farms organically, with an increasing focus on biodiversity and regenerative practices. In the cellar, the approach balances tradition and innovation: long macerations for Nebbiolo, stainless steel and oak aging thoughtfully calibrated to each varietal and vineyard. The goal remains the same: to express the nuance and purity of Roero’s land without excess or manipulation.
Matteo Correggia’s wines have become benchmarks of the region. The Roero Riserva Ròche d’Ampsèj is a powerful yet refined Nebbiolo that rivals top Barolo in complexity, while the Roero Arneis is a vibrant, textured white that helped elevate the grape’s reputation beyond Piedmont. Their Barbera d’Alba is rich and expressive, while the Nebbiolo Langhe offers a more immediate window into the house style.
Today, Matteo Correggia is more than just a winery, it’s a symbol of Roero’s rise, built on vision, resilience, and a deep respect for the land. With Giovanni at the helm and a new generation embracing innovation while honoring the past, the future of Roero has never looked brighter.
