G.D. Vajra – Purity, Precision, and Heart in the Hills of Barolo
G.D. Vajra is one of Barolo’s most beloved and respected family-run wineries, known not only for its exceptional wines, but for the integrity, warmth, and precision behind every bottle. Located in the village of Vergne, the highest commune in the Barolo zone, the Vajra estate has become a standard-bearer for a style that balances tradition with purity, structure with grace.
The estate was founded in the early 1970s by Aldo Vajra, who, as a teenager inspired by his grandfather’s vineyards and a passion for agriculture, began tending vines at a time when many locals were abandoning them. From the beginning, Aldo was committed to sustainable farming, respect for the land, and a deep belief in Barolo’s potential to produce wines of soul and complexity without sacrificing freshness or finesse.
Named for Aldo’s father, Giuseppe Domenico (G.D.), the estate is now run by the next generation: Aldo’s children Giuseppe, Francesca, and Isidoro, who carry forward the family’s legacy with energy and focus. Farming is certified organic, and the winemaking is defined by restraint, clarity, and an obsessive attention to detail. Fermentations are long and gentle, with careful use of oak (mostly large, neutral botti), allowing the character of each site to shine.
Vajra's vineyard holdings are among the most enviable in Barolo, including prized parcels in Bricco delle Viole, one of the highest and most expressive crus in the region. This is the flagship Barolo of the estate, lifted, floral, and age-worthy, with a signature vibrancy that reflects both the altitude and Vajra’s delicate touch. The family also farms fruit in Coste di Rose, Ravera, and Baudana, the latter through their ownership of the historic Luigi Baudana estate in Serralunga d’Alba.
While Barolo is the heart of the estate, Vajra’s range extends far beyond. They craft soulful expressions of Dolcetto, Barbera, and Langhe Nebbiolo, alongside rarities like Freisa, Clare J.C. (a juicy, chillable tribute to historical Nebbiolo), and a delicate, alpine Riesling that surprises even seasoned tasters.
What defines G.D. Vajra isn’t just their terroir or technique, it’s their philosophy. Every wine is made with care, humility, and a sense of family. Whether it’s a grand cru Barolo or a simple Dolcetto, Vajra wines always feel complete: elegant, precise, and full of quiet joy.
